끊임없이 호명되는 ‘청년’이라는 이름으로 살아가는 한 사람으로서 우리들은 픽션과 논픽션 사이 그 어딘 가에서 희미하게 존재하는 것 같다. 이젠 우리가 무엇인지, 내가 누구인지 알고 싶어 졌다.
나는 ‘김도윤’이라는 “가장 대한민국의 청년다운” 한 인물의 삶을 추적한다. 사진에서 보이는 여러 흔적들은 그가 어떤 삶을 살아왔는지, 어떤 하루를 보냈는지, 그가 누구인지 상상하게 만든다. 그러나 그는 사실 허구의 인물이다. AI프로그램이 디지털 세상에서 소비되어지는 '청년'의 데이터베이스를 토대로 “가장 대한민국의 청년다운” 인물을 창조해낸 것이다. AI프로그램은 빅데이터를 통해 인물의 외모, 취향, 성격 등 모든 걸 만들어낸다. 나는 그렇게 데이터로 만들어진 인물 ‘김도윤’의 정보를 기반으로 그의 존재를 재구성한 것이다.
청년이라는 이름으로 동시대를 살아가는 나는 그가 내 앞에 나타나주길 간절히 바라는 마음으로 그를 상상하고 기다리며 주변을 바라보기 시작했다. 아무것도 아니었던 물건들이, 흔적들이, 일상들이 모두 하나의 이야기처럼 다가왔다. 이 과정에서 나는 뜻하지 않게 나와 관련된 많은 것들을 마주하고 더 나아가 우리 세대가 공유하는 몇 가지의 기억들까지 마주할 수 있었다. 세상에 존재하지 않는 그의 체온이 느껴지는 것만 같았다. 분명 가장 청년다운 청년으로서 묘사된 그는 나와는 너무나도 다른 인물이었다. 그러나 김도윤이라는 유령이 훑고 간 자리에 남겨진 것은 나의 시선이었다.
작업이 끝나갈 때 즈음 나에게 피어난 구체적인 상상력은 그를 ‘가장 대한민국의 청년다운 인물’에서 ‘인간 김도윤’으로 인도했다. 데이터의 거센 폭풍우 속에서 고요한 태풍의 눈을 만난 것처럼 내 마음이 조금은 편안해진다.

Now I want to know what we are and who I am.
I track the life of a "most youthful person in Korea" named Kim Do-yoon. The various traces shown in the picture make you imagine what kind of life he has lived, what kind of day he has spent, and who he is. However, he is actually a fictional character. The AI program has created the "most youthful person in Korea" based on the database of "young people" consumed in the digital world. The AI program creates everything from a person's appearance, taste, and personality through big data. I reconstructed his existence based on the information of "Kim Do-yoon," a person made of data.
Living in the name of a young man at the same time, I began to look around, imagining and waiting for him to appear in front of me. Objects that were nothing, traces, and everyday lives all came up like a story. In this process, I was able to unexpectedly face many things related to me and furthermore, some memories that my generation shared. I felt his body temperature that did not exist in the world. Described as the most youthful man, he was a very different person from me. However, it was my gaze that was left in the place where the ghost of Kim Do-yoon scanned.
The specific imagination that bloomed to me near the end of the work led him from "the most youthful person in Korea" to "human Kim Do-yoon." My mind is a little relaxed, as if I had met the eyes of a silent typhoon in a strong storm of data.
